May 16, 2007: After 14 Years, Streaming Media Grows Up Photo and Story By Joe Zlomek It's been more than 14 years since the first video, in a thumbnail-sized window, was aired on the web. So it's no surprise that the exhibitor center Tuesday (May 15,2007) at the Streaming Media East 2007 conference in New York City was filled with vendors willing to testify that video streaming is now grown up and ready for prime-time. Michael Schreiber, production director for tv360.tv, told passers-by his company could help them create their own Internet TV channel. The firm has already launched RealHealthTV and RealMealsTV on the web, and is helping New York City mortgage broker Eric Barron launch a personalized video management system to train others in the mortgage business. Tv360.tv earns its money by producing and publishing clients' video content.
Video content owners who want their assets to work harder were being wooed by representatives of California-based Entriq. Entriq's MediaSphere solution hosts web-based "stores" from which its clients can sell their own videos on a pay-to-play basis. The drag-and-drop interface of MediaSphere simplifies the process of getting revenue out of content that might otherwise languish on someone's shelves, its reps claim. Exhibitors for New York's The Feed Room were touting their industry connections. Top-name publishers like Conde Nast, The New York Times, and the Oxygen Network all use Feed Room online video products. Proclaim, a new product from exhibitor Netbriefings, takes users in the opposite direction. Rather than serve large business clients, Proclaim is billed as a "personal multimedia webcast creation tool," It provides streaming services for live and archived rich-media presentations primarily for use by trainers, marketers and small sales teams. The intent, says Proclaim client Steve Vonder Haar of Interactive Media Strategies, is to "make online video a meaningful part of day-to-day business communications." Proclaim achieves that, he adds, with personal video messaging, prepared and pre-edited content, and sharing technologies.
